how to delete entire message thread in IOS 10

If you are in a thread first tap the left arrow at the top of the screen to return to the list of all threads. The tap Edit at the top of that screen, tap the circle at the left of the thread(s) you want to delete and then tap Delete at the bottom of the screen.
